President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the boards of nine major state-owned institutions in Ghana, with the decision taking immediate effect.

The affected institutions include the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO) and Ghana Post Company Limited, among other key public sector organisations.

Other institutions affected by the latest Ghana government board dissolution are the Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST), Consolidated Bank Ghana Limited (CBG), Prestea Sankofa Gold Limited, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund, TDC Ghana Limited and the National Sports Authority.

According to the Office of the President, the affected institutions will continue their normal operations under their existing management teams while the government prepares to appoint new boards.

A letter dated September 2, 2026, from the Office of the President and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr Callistus Mahama, confirmed that President Mahama had ordered the immediate dissolution of the nine boards.

The directive requires the relevant authorities to take all necessary steps, in accordance with Ghana’s laws and the governing instruments of the respective institutions, to implement the decision and formally notify members of the dissolved boards.

Management Teams to Remain in Charge

The management teams of the affected state institutions will remain responsible for their day-to-day operations under the supervision of their respective sector ministries until the boards are reconstituted.

However, the management teams have been instructed not to undertake major policy, financial or contractual decisions that require board approval unless they receive prior authorisation from the appropriate authorities.

The Office of the President said the dissolved boards will be reconstituted in due course, signalling that new appointments are expected to be announced as part of the government’s ongoing management and governance arrangements for state-owned enterprises.

President Mahama also expressed his appreciation to the outgoing board members for their service and contributions to the affected institutions.

The latest decision is expected to generate significant interest in Ghana politics, government appointments, public sector management and state-owned enterprises, particularly as the government moves to reorganise the leadership of key institutions across the country.
