The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disqualified 26 aspirants following its vetting exercise for the party’s 2026 internal elections. The affected candidates are expected to appeal the decisions on Monday, October 19.

Mahdi Jibrill, the party’s Acting Director of Elections and IT, said vetting had been completed across all 16 regions, with approximately 95 to 96 per cent of aspirants going through the process.

Speaking on Channel One Newsroom, Jibrill expressed confidence that the appeals committee would address the concerns of disqualified candidates and promote unity ahead of the elections. He noted that the vetting exercise had been largely peaceful, with nine regions recording no complaints from aspirants.

The NDC is also preparing for its constituency-level elections scheduled for October 24 and 25, 2026. According to Jibrill, ballot papers are expected to reach the districts by Wednesday, while the party remains on track to complete its internal election programme by December.

On campaigning, Jibrill clarified that the party has directed aspirants to avoid using billboards and instead focus their resources on engaging delegates directly. He explained that the elections are delegate-based and that all candidates are expected to comply with the directive.

The NDC’s internal elections form part of its broader efforts to reorganise party structures, strengthen internal democracy and prepare for future political activities.
