President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to construct emergency airstrips in regions across Ghana that do not have existing airports, as part of efforts to improve emergency air transport and medical evacuation services.
The initiative is expected to benefit the Western North Region, which currently lacks an operational commercial airport. The proposed airstrips will provide landing facilities for aircraft during emergencies, particularly situations requiring urgent medical evacuation.
Speaking during a courtesy call by chiefs from the Western North Region, President Mahama explained that each region without an existing airport would receive an airstrip measuring approximately two kilometres long, alongside a small control office to support aircraft operations.
He noted that regions with existing airports would not require the additional infrastructure, while the new facilities would help address challenges associated with accessing air transport during critical situations.
The proposed project forms part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s transport infrastructure, improve access to emergency healthcare and ensure that communities in underserved regions can receive timely assistance when urgent air travel is necessary.
