The Police Council’s recommendation for Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yuhonu to be re-engaged for two years has been approved by President Mahama.
The President stated that the IGP contract extension will begin on December 28, 2025, in a letter dated November 25, 2025, and signed by Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama.
December 2025 is the IGP’s statutory retirement age.
The IGP will now retire in December 2027 as a result of this new two-year re-engagement.
In addition to advancing important reforms and bolstering national security operations, the proposed extension aims to maintain continuity within the Ghana Police Service.
On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama named Mr. Christian Tetteh Yuhonu as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) after consulting with the Council of State.
On March 14, 2025, he took the oath of office. Dr. George Akuffo Dampare was replaced by Mr. Yuhonu.
He was appointed by former President Nana Akufo-Addo in July 2024 as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations prior to his nomination as IGP.
Mr. Yuhonu is a seasoned law enforcement professional with more than 40 years of experience in the Ghana Police Service.
He has held a number of important roles, such as Regional Commander for Greater Accra, Director-General of Operations, and Director-General of the Police Intelligence Directorate.
