Seven (7) people have been found guilty by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court of open defecation and dumping of trash in unapproved locations throughout the city.
Karl Quaye, Kwame Owusu Ansah, Daniel Nunoo, Razak Siedu, Haruna Abdul Rauf, Desmond Okeyika, and Moro Sebere are among those found guilty.
Under the direction of Her Lordship Rosemond Vera Aryeetey, the court found all of the defendants guilty and punished them with 50 penalty units, which is equal to GH₵600. If they don’t pay, they will be imprisoned for three months.
The prosecutor, Nii Okine Aryee, claims that during a special enforcement operation on October 7, 2025, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) Public Health Officers, under the direction of Madam Florence Kuukyi, apprehended the prisoners.
Speaking following the ruling, Mr Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the AMA’s Head of Public Affairs, clarified that the criminals were caught “busily engaged in open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse”, which he said was not only against the city’s sanitation bylaws but also harmful to the public’s health.
He pointed out that such actions aid in the spread of illnesses that continue to endanger locals’ health, including cholera, typhoid, and other diarrhoeal infections.
According to Mr Ankrah, the Assembly had refocused its strategy under the “Reset Accra” objective, stepping up enforcement and surveillance to guarantee rigorous adherence to sanitary standards.
He declared, “This is just the beginning,” adding that additional criminals had already been taken into custody and were being charged in court. “We will continue enforcement until Accra is the clean and healthy city that we all want, with the proper support and cooperation from the public.”
He urged citizens to support the ongoing “Clean Accra Now” campaign to purge the capital of trash and refrain from actions that jeopardise the city’s cleaning efforts.
