The long-standing and solid collaboration between the UK and Ghanaian parliaments has been recognized by Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, who has emphasized its critical role in Ghana’s democratic growth.
But in order for Parliament to adequately monitor the executive branch, he demanded more assistance. The UK government should provide Ghana’s Parliament with more support, Speaker Bagbin recommended, particularly in the field of information and communication technology (ICT).
He expressed the want to update parliamentary procedures in accordance with international norms and underlined the necessity of assistance as Ghana strives toward a paperless Parliament.
He also acknowledged the crucial role the UK government has played in promoting changes in Ghana’s Parliament, pointing to ongoing projects meant to strengthen the institution’s capabilities with the ultimate objective of strengthening Parliament’s oversight capabilities.
These remarks were made by Speaker Bagbin in a meeting with UK Minister for International Development Baroness Jenny Chapman, who came to Parliament House to learn more about the impact of UK aid on the Ghanaian Parliament.
During her speech, Baroness Chapman praised the partnership as a great example of cooperation and reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s democratic institutions going forward.
She praised Ghana’s Parliament for its tremendous accomplishments, emphasizing that although much more needs to be done, remarkable strides have been made in creating a strong and effective parliamentary system.
She said she was looking forward to finding out more about the effects of their assistance and ways to build on the achievements that have already been made.
