The Tree Crops Development Authority (TCDA) has provided logistical support to women involved in shea nut picking in Northern Ghana as part of efforts to improve productivity, safety and efficiency within the country’s shea value chain.
The intervention is designed to address some of the challenges faced by women who play an important role in the harvesting and supply of shea nuts, particularly in rural communities where shea picking provides a vital source of income and livelihood.
The support forms part of the TCDA’s broader efforts to strengthen the shea industry in Ghana, improve productivity and provide women shea nut pickers with the tools and equipment needed to carry out their work safely and efficiently.
TCDA Distributes Motorcycles and Protective Equipment
The items presented to the beneficiaries include 10 motorcycles, 500 pairs of protective gloves and 500 Wellington boots, alongside other essential supplies to support the women in their daily activities.
The motorcycles are expected to improve transportation and mobility, allowing the women to gain easier access to shea-producing communities and harvesting areas.
The protective gloves and Wellington boots are also expected to provide greater protection against some of the hazards associated with shea nut harvesting, particularly when working in remote locations and difficult terrain.
TCDA Reaffirms Commitment to Shea Industry
Speaking during the handing-over ceremony in Tamale, TCDA Chief Executive Officer Andy Osei reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to developing Ghana’s shea sector and improving the livelihoods of communities that depend on the industry.
He said the intervention forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the shea value chain, increase productivity and improve working conditions for women engaged in shea nut picking.
The TCDA believes that providing appropriate logistical and protective support can help women shea pickers perform their activities more effectively while contributing to the growth of the broader shea industry in Ghana.
Women Shea Pickers Welcome TCDA Intervention
The beneficiary women expressed their appreciation to the TCDA and other stakeholders for providing the equipment.
According to the women, the motorcycles and protective gear will help reduce some of the difficulties they encounter during the harvesting season and enable them to work more efficiently.
They also called for continued government and stakeholder support to strengthen the shea value chain, increase opportunities for women in rural communities and improve livelihoods across the Northern sector.
The latest intervention highlights the important role women play in Ghana’s shea industry and the need for continued investment in agricultural logistics, worker safety and rural economic development.
