MTN Ghana is set to invest approximately US$202 million in new spectrum licences as the telecommunications giant moves to expand its 5G network, improve service quality and meet growing demand for high-speed mobile and home internet services.

Scancom Plc, the company operating under the MTN Ghana brand, disclosed that the National Communications Authority (NCA) has notified it of the successful award of spectrum in the 700MHz and 3GHz frequency bands following a competitive application process.

MTN Ghana Secures 700MHz Spectrum

As part of the latest spectrum allocation, MTN Ghana has secured two of the three available lots in the 700MHz band.

The allocation provides the telecommunications company with 2 × 20MHz of bandwidth at a licence cost of approximately US$100.9 million.

The 700MHz spectrum is expected to support MTN Ghana’s efforts to improve network coverage and strengthen connectivity, particularly for mobile users and communities requiring reliable broadband services.

MTN Ghana Gets 150MHz in 3GHz Band

MTN Ghana has also secured all three available lots in the 3GHz band, giving the company a total of 150MHz of bandwidth.

The licence fee for the 3GHz spectrum stands at approximately US$101.1 million.

Combined, the two spectrum awards bring MTN Ghana’s planned investment to about US$202 million.

Investment to Boost Ghana’s 5G Connectivity

The new spectrum licences are expected to play an important role in MTN Ghana’s strategy to expand its 5G capabilities and enhance the quality of telecommunications services across the country.

The investment comes at a time when demand for high-speed internet, mobile broadband and home connectivity continues to grow, driven by increased use of digital services, smartphones, online business and streaming platforms.

The additional spectrum capacity could enable MTN Ghana to handle increasing network traffic while supporting faster and more reliable connectivity for both individual customers and businesses.

The latest development also highlights the growing investment in Ghana’s telecommunications and digital economy, as operators seek additional spectrum resources to meet the country’s rising demand for advanced mobile and broadband services.
