The prosecution against the organizer of the Democracy Hub demonstrators, who were detained for demonstrating against illegal mining (galamsey), has been dropped by the Attorney General.
Following their protest, the demonstrators who had taken to the streets to call for more government action against environmental degradation were arrested and charged.
But the case is essentially over because the Attorney General’s office has dismissed all charges.
During the demonstration, approximately 53 people were taken into custody, including Ama Governor and convenor Oliver Barker-Vormawor.
The people were detained during protests meant to increase public awareness of the damaging environmental repercussions of illicit mining, or galamsey.
Concerns about how uncontrolled mining operations are destroying forests, farmlands, and waterways have been raised by activists more and more.
