Prior to its #OccupyBoG protest, the Minority spoke to attendees at a public discussion on Thursday at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). They criticized the Central Bank for its excessive lending to the government over the previous year.

Former President John Dramani Mahama did not need a loan from the top bank, according to Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central, even though 2016 was a difficult fiscal year and doubled as an election year. However, the current managers at the Central Bank are so involved in financial crime that they have turned the Bank into a crime scene.

“It is important to point out that, in 2016, on the watch of President John Mahama and notwithstanding that year’s general elections, the NDC government financed the entire budget without any support from the Bank of Ghana. The Bank of Ghana is now a crime scene and the managers of the economy led by Mr. Strategist aided and abetted this economic crime.”

The protest, which is set for September 5, 2023, is being planned by the Minority as a way to voice their displeasure with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana and his appointees, who they think have mishandled the top bank and should step down.

The police advised the Caucus to take alternate routes for the planned protest after the Minority gave notice that it will picket the Bank of Ghana’s headquarters on September 5 to formally present a petition to the governor demanding his and deputy’s resignation.

The Caucus rejected the offer, and a court order was eventually obtained to stop the demonstration, but the Caucus is resolute and has vowed to move forward with its preparations.
