The Interior Minister, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, received a courtesy call from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), which was led by Mr. Christoph Capelle, Officer-in-Charge of the UNODC Programme Office in Ghana. During the visit, the UNODC praised the Minister’s plans for the Ghana Prisons Service.
During the meeting, Hon. Muntaka presented plans for the Ghana Prisons Service, including the establishment of jail industrial projects, the implementation of prison agricultural projects, and the introduction of technology for prison management.

The UNODC staff commended the Minister’s visionary approach and promised to continue working with and supporting him.
The Nelson Mandela Toolkit, a resource created to support humane prison management in accordance with international standards, was presented to the Minister by the UNODC team, who also highlighted their previous and ongoing projects, demonstrating their dedication to supporting Ghana’s efforts in criminal justice reform and crime prevention.
The Minister reiterated his resolve to bring Ghana’s jail system into compliance with the Nelson Mandela Rules, which are a set of global standards for inmate care.
In order to further these efforts, he promised the UNODC his undivided support and continuing cooperation with the ministry.
The gathering emphasized a common commitment to enhancing Ghana’s criminal justice system via innovation and conformity to international norms.
