The mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has urged businesses and corporate institutions to help create jobs by purposefully hiring young people and people with disabilities (PWDs) as part of initiatives to increase possibilities for Accra residents.

While on working trips to the Melcom Group of Companies, Royal Motors, M/S Thakar Overseas Limited, and Sigma Gas Company Limited, the mayor made the call. The talks centred on enhancing collaborations with the private sector and increasing access to good jobs.

In order to improve livelihoods and boost the local economy of the city, the mayor asked businesses to make inclusion a conscious strategy by reserving opportunities for young people and competent PWDs.

According to him, the visits were a component of the Assembly’s larger effort to engage stakeholders, which aims to solve development issues through collaborations and encourage the creation of jobs and more equitable hiring practices across businesses.

According to Managing Director Ramesh Sadhwa, Melcom now employs over 6,000 Ghanaians worldwide and is looking to fill over 100 open positions, but it is having trouble finding the qualified candidates needed for many of these positions.

He clarified that despite months of hiring for specialised jobs like gas technicians, electricians, welders and plumbers, the company was still experiencing a severe skills shortage.

He continued by saying that although the company needed more machine operators and other trained workers for its production operations, many of the applications it received did not match the experience requirements.

The company’s reliance on specialised apparatus, according to the managing director, made it challenging to hire candidates without any real-world expertise because mistakes could harm pricey machinery and cause production delays.

He said that staffing shortages remained at all sites and that Melcom had been operating some activities around-the-clock for years.

He added that utilities like water and electricity were covered by the company as part of its welfare support, and that the company had operated a subsidised canteen and provided dormitory accommodations for select employees in order to support workers and lessen the difficulties associated with commuting.

During his conversation with the mayor, the managing director of Royal Motors stated that the firm was ready to train interested candidates in motorbike riding and was willing to hiring more workers at its assembly plant following the approval of the Okada bill.
