A sizable shipment of illegal opioid-containing medications that entered the nation under dubious circumstances has been destroyed by the Ministry of Health in a clear attempt to address the opioid crisis and safeguard public health.
There were 230 boxes of opioids in the destroyed shipment, including 128 boxes of Tafrodol, 92 boxes of Timaking Tapertado, and 10 boxes of Rahol Tapentadol.
Due to the possibility of widespread abuse and addiction, especially among young people, the consignment posed serious health hazards to the general public.
Under the direction of important legal and regulatory agencies, the destruction exercise was conducted at Vigour-DW Enterprise, a waste management specialist in Ashaiman.

A court order was strictly followed during the operation.
The Ministry chose to publicly burn the medications as a rare and symbolic show of resolve. Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister of Health, stressed that the move was intended to serve as a strong warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade in addition to removing the dangerous narcotics.
“We will not stop here. After the safe disposal of this consignment, we will further investigate the clearing agent and the importer and hand them over to the Attorney General for prosecution,” he affirmed.
The public was also urged by the minister to exercise caution and notify the police right away of any questionable drug-related activity.
“We all have a role to play in protecting our communities,” he said.
He reiterated the Ministry’s dedication to maintaining public safety and carrying out its initiatives to protect the welfare of all citizens and the nation’s productivity.
The High Court Registrar, officials from the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), the Ministry of Health, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), and members of the media attended the occasion.
The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining the nation’s production and development while guaranteeing the safety and well-being of all citizens.
