The National Peace Council (NPC) has stated that it is extremely worried about the escalating political tensions in the wake of some political actors’ recent incarceration for allegedly making remarks that violated national laws.
As the legislative authority tasked with preventing, managing, and resolving conflict under Act 818, the NPC stated that it is wise to demand composure and moderation from all parties.
“The National Peace Council reminds all Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana are non-negotiable pillars of our democracy and calls for moderation, circumspection and tolerance by actors in the media and public places,” a part of a press release dated May 20 stated.
“In this vein, we call on our respected Security and Judicial Institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism and ensure that the rights and freedoms of citizens are always upheld in the performance of their lawful duties,” the NPC continued.
In a same vein, the Council urged political parties, their communicators, and actors to abstain from making inflammatory, unsupported claims and acts that could provoke violence in the nation.
“The National Peace Council equally reminds political commentators both home and abroad to be mindful of their utterances and their impact on national cohesion and stability.”
“The NPC reiterates the fact that Ghana’s stability depends on our ability to disagree in our public discourse without resorting to abusive language or violence. We entreat the citizenry to act with responsibility and civility in accordance with the law,” the press release indicated,” the press announcement stated.
It said that the Council will meet with the party leadership in the coming days as part of its quarterly platform for fostering trust with political parties in order to discuss long-term remedies to this development and stop the situation from getting worse.
