Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry, paid a working visit to Accra’s Abossey Okai Spare Parts Market on Monday, January 12, 2026, as part of the government’s efforts to promote fair pricing and consumer protection in the car parts sector.

The purpose of the visit was to examine current vehicle spare part costs and engage traders in discussions about operational difficulties.

Hon. Ofosu-Adjare was accompanied by Accra’s Mayor, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, and Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations President, Mr. Clement Boateng.

During the visit, the Minister conducted a closed-door meeting with executives from the spare parts dealers’ association to get firsthand information on market conditions.

Addressing the traders, the Minister explained that her visit was a follow-up to an earlier engagement held a few weeks ago at the Ministry where discussions centered on the stability of the Ghanaian cedi and the need for traders to reflect the improved currency performance in their pricing.

She stressed government’s commitment to ensuring fairness and transparency in the pricing of goods, particularly items that directly affect transport costs and the general cost of living.

The President of the Abossey Okai Market Association, Mr. Henry Okyere Jnr., admitted that spare part prices have dropped dramatically in recent weeks.

However, he noted middlemen’s activities, sometimes known as “Affairs,” as a significant concern. According to him, these middlemen frequently intercept car owners and offer spare parts at inflated costs, giving the misleading impression that Abossey Okai dealers overprice their products.

He noted that unscrupulous auto mechanics take advantage of naive car owners by misrepresenting the cost of parts.

In response, Hon. Ofosu-Adjare revealed the government’s proposal to construct a police presence at the market’s entrance to curb the activities of unethical intermediaries.

She did, however, urge spare parts merchants to look into ways to integrate and formally employ some of these persons in order to promote market order and accountability.

The Trade Minister thanked the spare parts dealers for their cooperation and assured them of the government’s ongoing involvement, advocating continuous collaboration in support of Ghana’s industrialisation and economic transformation agendas.

Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, Mayor of Accra, also declared that by the first week of February 2026, the government will establish a designated car park along the Agbogbloshie stretch to relieve congestion in the Abossey Okai region.

He stated that the measure will boost accessibility and encourage car owners to interact directly with shop owners.
