The Wenchi Divisional Police Command has restored calm at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following disturbances that occurred during the community’s Yam Festival celebration on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

The incident, which occurred at the Four Junction area after the festival programme had ended, reportedly left two people dead and 14 others injured, including a police officer.

According to the police, preliminary information indicates that 13 people, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment.

Gunshots Reported After Yam Festival Celebration

The Ghana Police Service said the disturbances occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on October 3, 2026, shortly after the Yam Festival programme had concluded.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Tabiri Yaw 11 and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to his palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the subsequent disturbances.

The Wenchi Divisional Police Command moved in to restore order and has since brought the situation under control.

Police Investigate Nchiraa Disturbances

The police have commenced investigations into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the deaths recorded during the disturbances.

The bodies of the two deceased persons have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital Mortuary, where they will be preserved pending autopsy.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations as efforts are made to establish what led to the violence following the Yam Festival celebration.
