Yaw Sarpong, a renowned gospel musician from Ghana and the founder of the Asomafo gospel group, passed away.

He died in Kumasi on January 20, 2026.

His manager, Nana Poku Ashis, confirmed his passing to Myjoyonline.com. Additional information about his passing has not yet been made public.

His demise occurs just one month after Maame Tiwa, a vital member of Yaw Sarpong’s Asomafo music group, passed away. This loss had a profound impact on the gospel music community.

Yaw Sarpong had been struggling with his health for a while, taking infrequent breaks from public appearances to concentrate on his recuperation.

As the leader of Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo, a group that influenced the form and sound of contemporary Akan gospel music, Yaw Sarpong gained national popularity and is widely recognised as one of the most important players in Ghana’s gospel music history.

The trio gained notoriety for their disciplined, Christian-inspired music and powerful lyrical content.

Wo Haw Ne Hwan, Tie Obiaa, Aduro Yesu, and Awurade Kasa are just a few of the well-known gospel songs that Yaw Sarpong and Asomafo wrote over the years; many of these songs are still played in Ghanaian churches.

Yaw Sarpong received the Telecel Ghana Music Awards’ Lifetime Achievement award in 2025.
