22 people, including Dominase Nkwanta and Adjakaa Manso, have been arrested by the Western Central Police Command for unlawful mining activities in various sections of the Western Region.
The arrests took place on April 8, 2025, as part of an intelligence-led effort to stop “galamsey,” or unlawful mining, in the area.
Albert Adu Bonsra, 19, Stephen Kwakye, 20, Richard Atigah, 23, Yaw Menanyi, 19, Al-Mustapha Alidu, 26, Jutu Francis, 20, Hakitu Zibo, 20, Nana Yaw Boakye, 30, Kwesi Evans, 23, Isaac Cobby, 20, and Bashiru Ali, 23 are among the suspects, according to ACP Bismark Agyapong, Deputy Western Central Regional Commander, who spoke to the media. Abapor Frank, 20; Wasah Moses, 22; Bukari Haruna, 23; Abdulai Lukman, 21; Yeboah Rashid, 19; Kwame Emmanuel, 19; Kwesi Francis, 21; Atta Francis, 20; Ayew Sali, 22; Fataw Gariba, 22; and Alkainu Hassan, 20 are the remaining individuals.

Police found equipment thought to have been utilized in the illicit mining operations during the operation. Among these were two chamfan machines, seven shovels, one pick-axe, and eleven pumping devices.
According to ACP Agyapong, the suspects have been remanded into custody to aid in the continuing investigations after being arraigned before the Asankrangwa District Court.
The case docket will be sent to the Attorney-General’s Department for additional legal action and potential prosecution, he added.
He took advantage of the occasion to warn those engaged in illicit mining to stop, highlighting the government’s steadfast dedication to combating the threat.
“Anyone caught will face the full rigours of the law,” he warned.
