President John Dramani Mahama has approved the immediate release of GH¢300 million from the Contingency Fund to fund emergency flood relief and mitigation activities following heavy flooding in sections of Accra and other communities in southern Ghana.

Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, said in a statement that the monies were authorised in direct response to the torrential rains that flooded multiple villages, affecting numerous individuals and properties.

The remaining GH¢150 million will assist long-term flood mitigation initiatives to help lessen the recurrence of such disasters, while the remaining GH¢150 million will be used for immediate emergency aid for flood victims.

In order to collaborate closely with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other organisations in continuing rescue and relief efforts, President Mahama has also ordered the deployment of personnel from the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.

Mahama had already conducted an airborne inspection of the flooded districts to determine the extent of the damage and announced a number of initiatives targeted at safeguarding residents and averting similar incidents in the future.
