Ghana will no longer spend more than $15 million a year on renting homes overseas for its diplomatic missions, according to President John Dramani Mahama, who called the practice unsustainable and costly.

On Thursday, September 4, 2025, following the swearing-in of newly selected ambassadors and envoys, the President stated that the government has authorized a new framework called the Strategic Transition from Rental to Developing (STRIDE) program to solve the challenge under the Reset Agenda.

“Ghana cannot continue spending more than $15 million every year on renting properties abroad for our diplomatic use. This is not a judicious use of taxpayers’ resources, and the Reset Agenda is an immediate reversal of this trend,” he stated.

He said that the STRIDE strategy has already received Cabinet approval, and the Finance and Foreign Affairs Ministers have been given the urgent responsibility of resolving the issue.

He clarified that the new policy would guarantee that Ghana’s foreign missions be housed in state-owned buildings, cutting down on wasteful spending and improving Ghana’s reputation overseas.

“From my latest briefing, a transaction advisor has been appointed, standard developments are being prepared, and funding mechanisms are already being negotiated,” President Mahama said.

“This shift will ensure that our missions abroad are housed in proper homes owned by the republic, reducing wasteful expenditure while safeguarding Ghana’s dignity on the international stage,” the President added.
