Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has resigned from Ghana’s Council of State
Sources claim that the former Chief Justice stopped attending Council meetings after the judgement about the removal procedure involving former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, while the facts leading her retirement are still unknown.
Additionally, it is said that she (Torkornoo) offered her resignation at the end of 2025.
Justice Akuffo served as Chief Justice of Ghana from 2017 to 2020.
The President receives advice on national administration and policy issues from the Council of State, a constitutional advisory body.
Elected and appointed representatives from all throughout the nation make up its membership.
Thirty of the thirty-one members of the Council of State voted in favour of establishing a prima facie case against then Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo in April 2025.
The lone member to abstain was Sophia Akuffo, who at the time did not give a public explanation for her choice.
Neither the Office of the President nor the Council of State have yet to formally announce her rumoured resignation.
