Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a former vice president, urged President John Dramani Mahama to refuse to sign the Tribunals Bill, 2026, citing the stance of the Trades Union Congress, or TUC.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stated that worries about the legislation go beyond political parties in a live video that was circulated on social media.
“This is not a partisan request. The Trades Union Congress, the voice of millions of Ghanaian workers, has called for the bill to be withdrawn altogether, warning that in its current form, it could become a potent tool for weaponising justice delivery,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia emphasised that the issues brought up shouldn’t be written off as partisan criticism.
“Those are the words of Ghanaian workers, not of any political party,” he added.
His remarks follow the Tribunals Bill’s approval by Parliament on its third reading.
Before it is submitted to President Mahama for approval, the legislation aims to reinstate tribunals under a revamped legal framework intended to promote the administration of justice and increase access to legal remedies.
Dr. Bawumia insisted that before the President decides whether to sign the bill into law, the issues brought up by organised labour should be considered.
