Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded a significant boost during the week ending July 31, 2026, with the total value of shares traded rising by 251% to GH¢168.92 million, driven largely by strong investor demand for MTN Ghana shares.

The volume of shares traded also increased sharply by 158.2%, climbing to 29.73 million shares from 11.51 million shares recorded the previous week. As a result, market turnover surged from GH¢48.12 million, highlighting growing confidence among investors in the Ghana stock market.

GSE Composite Index Continues Strong Growth

The impressive trading performance pushed the GSE Composite Index up by 0.68%, closing the week at 15,434.87 points. Meanwhile, the GSE Financial Stocks Index slipped slightly by 0.52% to 8,238.07 points, reflecting weaker performance among some listed banks and financial institutions.

The total market capitalization on the Ghana Stock Exchange edged higher by 0.16%, reaching GH¢292.51 billion, compared to GH¢292.06 billion the previous week.

Since the start of 2026, the GSE Composite Index has delivered an impressive 75.99% return, while the Financial Stocks Index has gained 77.27%, making Ghana’s stock market one of the strongest-performing exchanges in Africa.

MTN Ghana Dominates Stock Market Trading

MTN Ghana remained the standout performer, generating GH¢131.26 million in trading value from 18.58 million shares exchanged during the week.

The telecommunications giant accounted for approximately 77.7% of the total value traded and 62.5% of the total trading volume, reaffirming its position as the most actively traded stock on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

The broader Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector contributed nearly 77.8% of total market turnover, underscoring MTN Ghana’s dominant influence on overall trading activity.

Financial Sector Follows Behind

The financial sector ranked second with GH¢24.68 million in turnover, while manufacturing stocks generated GH¢5.02 million. The food and beverage sector recorded GH¢4.99 million, with insurance, agriculture, mining, distribution, and exchange-traded funds contributing only modestly to total market activity.

Among individual stocks, GCB Bank ranked second in trading value with GH¢20.25 million, followed by:

Intravenous Infusions Limited – GH¢4.98 million
Kasapreko PLC – GH¢4.68 million
Ecobank Ghana – GH¢1.71 million

By trading volume, Intravenous Infusions Limited followed MTN Ghana with 5.66 million shares, while Kasapreko traded 2.33 million shares, CAL Bank recorded 1.25 million shares, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) posted 597,544 shares.

Market Remains Concentrated in Few Stocks

Despite the impressive market performance, trading remained heavily concentrated, with MTN Ghana and GCB Bank accounting for nearly 90% of the week’s total trading value.

The busiest trading session occurred on Wednesday, July 29, when investors exchanged 18.39 million shares worth GH¢121.57 million, representing almost 72% of the week’s total turnover.

Trading activity slowed afterward, with daily turnover falling to GH¢24.66 million on Thursday and GH¢7.50 million on Friday. Market capitalization briefly reached GH¢293.18 billion on Thursday before ending the week at GH¢292.51 billion.

Top Gainers and Losers on the Ghana Stock Exchange

Among the week’s best-performing stocks, HORDS recorded the biggest price gain, rising 50% from GH¢0.26 to GH¢0.39, bringing its year-to-date return to 290%.

Intravenous Infusions Limited climbed 27.27% to close at GH¢0.84, maintaining its position as the best-performing stock on the Ghana Stock Exchange in 2026 with an outstanding 1,580% year-to-date return.

Other notable gainers included:

Cocoa Processing Company – up 6.25%
Clydestone Ghana – gained 5.56%
MTN Ghana – advanced 2% to GH¢7.14
Ecobank Ghana – rose 1.77% to GH¢39.00

On the losing side, Atlantic Lithium posted the biggest decline, dropping 9% to GH¢6.37.

Other stocks that recorded losses included:

SIC Insurance – down 4.33%
Societe Generale Ghana – fell 2.86%
Republic Bank Ghana – declined 2.78%
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) – lost 2.03%
CAL Bank, Kasapreko, Guinness Ghana, and TotalEnergies Ghana also ended the week lower.

Overall, stocks that experienced price movements recorded an average gain of 4.64%, reflecting continued investor optimism despite market concentration.

Investor Confidence Remains Strong

The latest Ghana Stock Exchange performance highlights sustained investor confidence in Ghana equities, with the GSE Composite Index maintaining its strong upward momentum throughout 2026. However, analysts note that market activity continues to be heavily driven by a small number of dominant stocks, particularly MTN Ghana, which remains the biggest force behind trading volumes and market turnover.
