Prof. Alidu won the Tamale Central by-election as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate.

Alidu Seidu Mahama, an associate professor in the University of Ghana (UG) Legon’s Political Science Department, was chosen on Saturday to be the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate (PC) in the upcoming by-election in the Northern Region’s Tamale Central Constituency.

Out of 1,511 valid ballots, Prof. Mahama received 840 votes, while his primary opponent, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Hannan Gundadoo, the former MCE of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, received 536 votes.

Dr. Seidu Fiter Mohammed received forty-four votes, Mr. Aliu Abdul Hamid received twenty-three, Alhassan Mbalba received ten, Dr. Abdul Rahaman Rashid received nine, Sadat Haruna received nine, Alhassan Osman Gomda (Naa Simani) received seven, Shamima Yakubu received five, Mariama Naana Salifu received five, Prof. Abdul Razak Abubakari received four, and Hajia Muleika Salisu received three.

However, throughout the voting process, one ballot was rejected.

Officials from the Northern Regional Electoral Commission kept an eye on and oversaw the election.

In the September 30 by-election, Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama was announced as the PC for the NDC Tamale Central constituency by the Northern Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr. Lucas Yiryel.

He expressed gratitude to the party and security personnel for the primaries’ orderly and peaceful conduct.

Following his victory, Prof. Mahama thanked the delegates and party supporters in an address.

Additionally, he expressed gratitude to his fellow candidates for their solidarity during the entire campaign.

Prof. Mahama said that although the election was difficult, it went according to plan and finished amicably.

Additionally, he offered prayers for the late MP Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Murtala’s soul.

Prof. Mahama declared that he will carry on the late MP’s legacy by supporting the region’s development.

After the MP passed away, the Tamale Central Constituency Seat became vacant.

In the meantime, the EC has scheduled the by-election for this month, September 30.
