On Wednesday, May 31, 2023, a group of market queens picked Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen’s nomination form as a sign of support for the NPP flagbearer candidate.

The organization, which is well-known for its work in grassroots mobilization, paid the GHS50,000 entry fee necessary for Mr. Kyerematen to take part in the next presidential primary elections on November 4, 2023.

By taking this measure, the market queens keep a promise they made to Kyerematen in January 2022.

The group’s head, Madam Sarkina, declared that they were ready to support Mr. Kyerematen’s campaign because of his familiarity with the concerns of market women and his background as a former trade minister.

The Kumasi Race Course Market Women have received donations of cement and quarry stones from the queens before, so this is not the first time they have expressed their support.

They spoke with the directors of the Kumasi Central Market during their discussions as well, pushing the market ladies to support Mr. Kyerematen and noting his accomplishments while serving in the Trades and Industry Ministry as arguments in favor of doing so.

The Kumasi Tomato Sellers Union’s president, Comfort Serwaa, said the union agreed to pay Mr. Kyerematen’s nomination fee as a sign of their confidence in his qualifications to lead this country.

“We made the decision that Mr. Kyerematen won’t be able to pick his forms; instead, we’ll gather the necessary funding and cover the charge. In order for Alan to become president of Ghana, we are here to pick up the necessary paperwork.

In order to concentrate on his campaign for the presidency, Mr. Kyerematen resigned from his position as Trades Minister in January 2023.

In 2007, the 67-year-old launched his maiden run for the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer position, but he was unsuccessful since Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo won.

Mr. Kyerematen, also known as “Alan Cash,” attempted again in 2010 and 2014 but failed.

Since 2018, he has promoted the government’s One District One Factory plan, which has given birth to around 170 factories nationwide.

Under Mr. Kyerematen’s direction at the Trade Ministry, the nation also saw global automakers like Suzuki, VW, Nissan, Sino Trucks, and others produce locally under the Automotive Development Policy.

From 2003 to 2007, Alan Kyerematen held the same role.

He has a long and illustrious history in politics, diplomacy, business growth, public policy, and international trade.

He is a former ambassador to the US, a senior corporate executive, a lawyer, and a UN policy advisor. From 2003 to 2007, he served as Ghana’s Minister of Trade, Industry, and Presidential Special Initiatives. During that time, he oversaw the conception, development, and execution of special initiatives and innovative programs that have now evolved into the country’s new strategic growth pillars.

In the WTO, the EU-ACP Economic Partnership Negotiations, AGOA, and UNCTAD, he also had a significant impact in shaping the agenda for African trade policy.
