Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has started negotiating with the US Embassy and Canadian High Commission to make visa arrangements easier for Ghanaian football enthusiasts.

Senior directors from the Foreign Affairs and Sports ministries, as well as Betty Krosbi Mensah, Technical Advisor to the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and Vice President of CAF, attended the high-level discussions in Accra.

Acting High Commissioner Dennis Roussel represented Canada, while Acting Ambassador Rolf Olson represented the United States.

The engagements were intended to ensure easy travel procedures for Ghanaian supporters, according to a statement made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and shared on his Facebook page.

“The objectives of these engagements include ensuring there is mutual understanding of all sides on expectations and requirements, enhancing coordination, improving visa facilitation, and developing clear working roadmaps to maximize satisfaction,” the Minister posted.

The prospect of creating unique visa arrangements for Ghanaian football officials, supporters, and the national team, apart from the normal visa application procedure, was also discussed in order to streamline travel logistics during the World Cup.

Ghanaian supporters will be able to return to the US after attending games in Canada and Mexico thanks to the US government’s decision to modify its single-entry visa restriction earlier this month.

A similar meeting with the Mexican Embassy is planned on Friday, Ablakwa continued, as part of continuous efforts to coordinate visa facilitation among the three host nations.
