Alhassan Suhuyini has stated that he would be in favour of dismantling the Office of the Special Prosecutor if a more robust anti-corruption framework were to be implemented in its place, as public discussion on the institution’s efficacy intensifies.
He emphasised that even though he has been “very indifferent” to the OSP since its founding, ongoing governance system improvement is necessary for the good of the country.
In an interview, he noted, “It appears that the calls for it to be scrapped are growing. I wouldn’t mind. If it gets to that, I will be one of those who will support that call, except that I will want in its place for something to be done.”
Suhuyini reaffirmed the necessity of separating the Attorney-General’s Office from the Ministry of Justice and recommended greater autonomy and funding for organisations like CHRAJ and EOCO.
He issued a warning, saying, “We cannot just scrap it for the sake of it. We should scrap it with the intention of strengthening the anti-corruption drive. We ought to do away with it in order to bolster the fight against corruption.”
Reforms must result in an institution that is “more rigorous, more frontal, and better than we currently have,” he said.
