The candidacy of Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s next Chief Justice has been approved by Parliament, with 163 members voting in favour and 69 against.

The approval was granted today, November 13, 2025, a Thursday.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised the Appointments Committee during his vetting on November 10 that he would advance equitable access to justice, deal with judicial process delays, and propose policies to increase court efficiency.

Declaring that his candidacy was based on merit and extensive judicial service, he refuted accusations that it was influenced by politics. In the administration of justice, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie promised to maintain openness, effectiveness, and respect for the rule of law.

Disagreement between the Majority and Minority caucuses characterised the debate on the floor of Parliament before to the vote.

The Minority contended that the approval had to be postponed until the outstanding legal matters concerning the former Chief Justice were settled.

However, after a headcount revealed a resounding majority in favour of the nominee, the motion was approved.

One of the justices with the longest tenure on the Supreme Court is Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who joined the court in 2008. Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo will retire later this month, and he will take her place.

President John Dramani Mahama is anticipated to swear him in in compliance with the Constitution.

On the same day that Parliament was supposed to hear the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, the approval was granted.
