Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang joined the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, the Fisheries Commission, and partners, including Hɛn Mpoano, to officially declare Ghana’s first Marine Protected Area (MPA) in the Greater Cape Three Points Area.

The government is deeply dedicated to protecting our marine resources as a key component of Ghana’s blue economy program.

Over 21 coastal settlements in Ahanta West and Nzema East are connected by the recently designated MPA, which covers a vital natural zone and demonstrates a balanced approach to conservation.

The goal of this program is to ensure sustainable practices that enable marine ecosystems to regenerate, so assuring long-term food security and economic resilience, rather than to restrict fishing communities.

The MPA Management Executive Committee’s inauguration is a significant step toward efficient implementation and governance.

“Protecting the ocean is ultimately about protecting our people, as millions of Ghanaians depend on the productivity of our marine environment,” she said.

The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Hon., gets acknowledged by the vice president for his efforts.

This milestone was made possible by the patience and involvement of Emelia Arthur, the technical committee, development partners, and the coastal communities.

While making sure the MPA has a significant impact, the government is still dedicated to assisting coastal communities through inclusive policies, infrastructure development, and sustainable alternatives.

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang urged for a collaborative approach to its implementation, stating that long-term success will be dependent on teamwork, compliance, and shared accountability.

According to Section 39 of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146), and with Cabinet approval, the vice president formally declared the Greater Cape Three Points Area a Marine Protected Area, a significant step toward preserving Ghana’s marine heritage for future generations.
