Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration got off to a good start in 2017, according to former president John Agyekum Kufuor, but the latter part of his administration was marked by some actions that, in his opinion, were difficult to understand.
Mr. Kufuor specifically mentioned how, in his opinion, Nana Akufo-Addo handled the COVID-19 pandemic issues very well but ultimately failed to handle the “bond market” issues in an interview with Deloris Frimpong Manso on her Delay Show, which aired on TV3 and was posted on YouTube on Saturday [Dec 6, 2025].
He also gave the example of the National Cathedral project, which was first intended to be privately funded but ultimately turned out to be state-supported.
Even though government property had been set aside for the project, he claimed that at first he believed the Cathedral to be “a private enterprise,” but it turned out to be an unfinished building.
When asked if he was consulted on any of those choices, Mr. Kufuor replied that he wasn’t.
In a rare public criticism of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) leadership under Nana Akufo-Addo, Mr. Kufuor claimed that although the NPP won the 2016 elections by a “landslide” and ran on Kufuor’s record from 2001 to January 2009, they handled things differently after taking power, beginning well but making dubious choices.
He also mentioned a government decision made during President Akufo-Addo’s administration that he did not understand: the Power Distribution Services (PDS) agreement with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
Despite being a member of the NPP, the former president disclosed that he was not informed about a number of important government activities.
