A major fire has destroyed Tema Community 26 in the Greater Accra Region, which houses a warehouse used to store several barrels of alcohol.
The fire started on Sunday, July 12, and as firemen raced to the site to stop it from spreading to neighbouring properties, dense plumes of smoke rose into the sky.
Four fire tenders from the Tema Industrial Area, Ashaiman, Tema Regional Headquarters, and Dodowa fire stations were sent by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to put out the fire.
At the warehouse, where substantial amounts of alcohol are kept, firefighters are fighting fierce flames in an effort to contain the fire. It is thought that the existence of extremely flammable materials is making battling fires more difficult.
There has been no official confirmation of casualties or injuries, and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
The amount of the warehouse’s destruction and whether other structures have been impacted have not been disclosed by the GNFS officials.
As efforts to contain the fire and stop it from spreading further continue, emergency personnel are still on the site.
After the situation has been brought under control, the Ghana National incident Service is anticipated to start looking into what caused the incident.
As more details become available, more updates are anticipated.
