The Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) is preparing to expand its operations and reinvest a significant portion of its profits into improving efficiency and increasing the supply of natural gas for electricity generation and industrial activities.
The expansion strategy follows the company’s strong financial performance and is expected to strengthen Ghana’s energy security, support industrial growth and improve the availability of reliable gas supply.
Ghana Gas Targets Expansion and Reinvestment
Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Gas, Judith Adjobah Blay, said the company’s next stage of development will move beyond profitability to focus on expansion and strategic reinvestment.
She explained that investing in infrastructure and operational capacity would enable Ghana Gas to improve its services and play a bigger role in meeting the country’s growing natural gas demand.
Proposed Takoradi-Tema Gas Pipeline
One of the major projects being considered is the construction of an onshore natural gas pipeline linking Takoradi to Tema.
The proposed pipeline would extend gas supplies from the Atuabo Gas Processing Plant beyond Ghana’s Western Region, passing through parts of the Central and Eastern regions before reaching Tema’s major industrial hub.
The project is expected to make natural gas more accessible to businesses and industries located along the pipeline route.
Improved gas availability could also support industrial development, manufacturing, power generation and job creation in communities along the corridor.
Ghana Gas Expansion to Support Industrial Development
The proposed infrastructure forms part of Ghana Gas’ broader strategy to strengthen the country’s gas processing and distribution network.
By expanding the supply of natural gas, the company aims to help industries secure a more reliable energy source while supporting Ghana’s efforts to increase domestic energy production.
Greater access to natural gas could also help businesses manage energy costs and improve operational efficiency.
PURC Inspects Ghana Gas Facilities
The company’s expansion plans were highlighted during an industrial tour by commissioners and management of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC).
The visit provided the PURC, Ghana Gas’ economic regulator, with an opportunity to observe the company’s facilities and operations directly.
Richard Kirk-Mensah, Head of Corporate Communications at Ghana Gas, said the inspection was intended to give PURC officials a clearer understanding of the company’s ongoing activities and proposed infrastructure projects.
He explained that seeing the facilities and expansion works firsthand would provide regulators with greater insight than relying solely on presentations and verbal briefings.
Ghana’s Energy Sector Expansion
The planned investment by Ghana Gas comes as the country continues to focus on strengthening its energy infrastructure, natural gas supply and power generation capacity.
The Takoradi-Tema pipeline, if implemented, could become an important part of Ghana’s gas transmission network by connecting gas supplies from the Western Region to major industrial and commercial centres in the eastern part of the country.
Ghana Gas says its expansion and reinvestment strategy is aimed at creating a more efficient operation while ensuring that natural gas remains available for Ghana’s power sector and industrial growth.
