South African football has been plunged into sadness following the death of 25-year-old midfielder Jayden Adams, just weeks after representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, announced the sad news on Saturday and honoured one of the nation’s most gifted football players.

While investigations are ongoing, authorities have urged the public and media to refrain from speculating about Adams’ cause of death.

“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,” McKenzie stated.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters.”

Adams was a member of the historic South African team that made it to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.

As Bafana Bafana earned a remarkable spot in the Round of 32, he played a significant role in the competition, starting group-stage matches against Mexico and Czechia before making another appearance against South Korea.

They ultimately lost to Canada, ending their campaign.

Adams was going through a challenging personal time at the time of the World Cup campaign.

Despite losing his grandmother during the competition, he persisted in representing his nation, winning praise for his professionalism and fortitude.

Adams had made a name for himself as one of South Africa’s most talented midfielders at the club level.

He started his professional career at Stellenbosch FC, where he made over 100 appearances for the main squad after rising through the academy.

He was transferred to Mamelodi Sundowns in early 2025 as a result of his outstanding achievements, and he soon rose to prominence there.

Adams continued to wow with his poise, vision, and work ethic in midfield as he assisted the Pretoria-based team in winning the 2025–2026 CAF Champions League.

Adams earned 13 caps for South Africa after making his senior international debut in 2022. He scored twice during the nation’s successful 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

After learning of his passing, condolences have flooded in from all throughout the football community.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino joined football officials in recognising the midfield player’s commitment to the game and sending condolences to his family, friends, and teammates. The South African Football Players’ Union called his passing as an incalculable loss.

The football community was horrified by Adams’ sudden passing, which ended the career of a player who was thought to be among South Africa’s best prospects.

His club and national team exploits have established him as a midfield player with the ability to rise to prominence in African football.

Additional information about his passing has not yet been made public.
