President John Dramani Mahama’s government is set to expand Ghana’s sports infrastructure with the construction of 10 new mini stadiums across the country, Sports Minister Kofi Adams has announced.

The announcement was made on Thursday, August 20, 2026, during the 32nd Ordinary Congress of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) held at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

According to Kofi Adams, President Mahama has revised the government’s initial plan to construct six new stadiums and has now increased the number to 10 modern sports facilities.

“President Mahama has reviewed his decision to build six new stadiums; he’ll now build 10 new stadiums,” the Sports Minister stated.

Government Expands Sports Infrastructure Plans

The planned stadium projects are part of the government’s strategy to address Ghana’s persistent sports infrastructure deficit and provide improved facilities for football development and other sporting activities.

The initial plan focused on building modern sports facilities in Ghana’s six newly created regions: Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah and Ahafo.

However, the government has now expanded the programme to cover additional parts of the country.

The broader objective is to ensure that regions across Ghana have access to modern sports infrastructure capable of hosting football matches, athletics competitions, entertainment events and other major sporting activities.

TnA Stadium to Serve as a Model

The government has identified the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa as a potential model for the proposed stadium projects.

The stadium, constructed by Gold Fields at a reported cost of US$13 million, has been praised by President Mahama as an example of a modern and relatively cost-effective sports facility.

The government is expected to draw lessons from the Tarkwa project as it develops plans for the construction of additional stadiums across Ghana.

Ho Sports Stadium Redevelopment Also Considered

In addition to building new stadiums, the government is considering the redevelopment of existing sports facilities to increase their economic and social value.

One major project under consideration is the transformation of the Ho Sports Stadium into a modern multi-purpose facility.

The proposed redevelopment could allow the facility to host football matches, other sporting competitions, entertainment programmes and commercial activities.

The initiative is also linked to the government’s 24-Hour Economy agenda, which seeks to maximise the use of public infrastructure while creating more opportunities for businesses, jobs and economic activity.

New Stadiums Could Boost Ghana Football

The planned investment in sports infrastructure could significantly benefit Ghana football development, particularly at the grassroots level.

Modern stadiums and sporting facilities would provide football clubs with improved venues for training and competitive matches while creating better environments for identifying and developing young football talents.

For years, inadequate sports infrastructure has been cited as one of the major obstacles to the growth of sports in Ghana. The construction of new stadiums could therefore help strengthen the country’s sporting ecosystem and improve opportunities for athletes and sports organisations.

The announcement at the GFA Congress underscores the Mahama administration’s commitment to making sports infrastructure development an important part of Ghana’s national development agenda.

With 10 new mini stadiums planned, the government hopes to create modern facilities that can support grassroots sports, improve football development and enhance Ghana’s competitiveness in international sporting competitions.
