Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for a fair, efficient and business-friendly tax system that can generate the revenue Ghana needs to fund national development while reducing unnecessary pressure on individuals and businesses.
She made the call at the 14th Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG), which brought together tax experts, policymakers, business leaders and international participants under the theme, “Tax Reforms in Practice: Implications for Businesses and Tax Administration.”

The Vice President said the government has already introduced measures aimed at reducing the tax burden and simplifying Ghana’s tax system. However, she stressed that tax reform should go beyond changes to legislation.
According to her, improving tax compliance in Ghana will also require stronger tax administration, increased use of technology and data, simplified procedures and improved taxpayer education.
She noted that public trust is essential to building an effective tax system. Taxpayers are more likely to fulfil their obligations when they understand how the system works, consider it fair and can interact with tax authorities without unnecessary challenges.
Vice President Opoku-Agyemang also highlighted the important role of tax professionals in Ghana, saying they help businesses and individuals understand their tax obligations, promote voluntary compliance and provide valuable expertise for the development of effective tax policies.
She further explained that Ghana must remain prepared to respond to changes in international taxation as global business models continue to evolve.
The Vice President called for stronger collaboration with other African countries to ensure that Ghana’s economic interests are properly represented in global tax policy discussions and international tax reforms.
She congratulated the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana, for successfully organising the 14th conference and commended tax professionals for their contribution to strengthening Ghana’s tax administration and economic development.
