President John Dramani Mahama has promised Ghanaians that the 24-hour economy effort will produce transformative effects following the passing of the 24-hour Economy Authority Bill.

Speaking on Friday at the groundbreaking ceremony for a 24-hour model market at Assin Bereku to kick off his two-day #ResettingGhana tour of the Central Region, the president said the new legislation lays the groundwork for businesses to access incentive packages designed to drive round-the-clock commercial activity.

President Mahama highlighted the economic achievements of his administration, saying that in just 18 months, Ghana’s economy has risen from 11th to 8th among the strongest in Africa, surpassing nations like Ethiopia and Côte d’Ivoire.

“When we assumed office, the Cedi was in freefall, and our finances were in ruin. Through deliberate reforms to reset the economy, we have stabilised the currency and built a foundation that remained resilient even during the height of the US-Israel-Iran tensions,” the President said.

He pointed out that these changes gave Ghana a safety net in the face of worldwide unrest brought on by tensions between the US, Israel, and Iran.

The Assin Bereku project is a component of a national effort to build contemporary marketplaces in each of the 261 districts.

These hubs are intended to enable 24-hour commerce, giving farmers and traders direct revenue streams.

A police station, fire station, clinic, pharmacy, bank, cold stores, daycare center, restaurants, and transit terminal will all be included in the model market, which will be a comprehensive commercial hub.

Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, the Paramount Chief of Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Area, endorsed the program and compared it to the policies of superpowers like the US and Japan.

The Chief stated, “The 24-hour economy is a game-changer. Let us rally behind it as we do for the Black Stars, for it is the key to creating jobs for our teeming youth.”
