The Trump administration has blocked immigrant visa processing indefinitely for citizens from 75 countries, marking one of its most extensive measures to limit legal entry into the United States.
The restriction, which goes into force on January 21, targets applicants who officials fear are likely to become a “public charge” – those who rely on government subsidies to meet their fundamental necessities.
According to a Wednesday state department memo, the comprehensive list includes countries from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
The cable states that dual nationals with a valid passport for a nation not on the list or applicants who can show that their travel would serve a “America First” national interest are exempt.
The consular official “must refuse the case” if a visa has previously been granted but has not yet been printed.
