Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia faces stiff competition from four members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the NPP’s presidential primary on January 31, 2026.

Dr. Bawumia, the NPP presidential candidate in the 2024 general election, is seeking re-election to lead the party into the 2028 elections.

He is competing against Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Bryan Acheampong, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong.

However, the ruling NDC is covertly endorsing some of his rivals in the NPP’s upcoming flagbearer contest, posing an external threat to the former vice president.

In addition to a whispering campaign against Dr. Bawumia, the report discovered that some security services and NDC business moguls are providing outrageous financial support to some of his primary rivals.

The government’s failure to make required payments to certain contractors and former government personnel who are thought to be Dr. Bawumia’s supporters in order to stop them from financially supporting the former vice president was reportedly an even more concerning development.

Only following the NPP presidential primary will these funds be made.

According to additional information obtained, sources inside the NDC stated that because Dr. Bawumia has been effectively promoted nationwide since 2008, he is seen as a formidable, credible, and winnable candidate in the 2028 presidential race.

Because President John Dramani Mahama, who has been on the presidential ticket since 2012, will not be present for the upcoming general elections, the insider sources noted that the NDC will not want the former vice president to run against a new candidate from the ruling party.

It seems that Dr. Bawumia is well aware of the strong opposition from the ruling NDC.

During his campaign tour, the former vice president told party delegates in the Oti Region that the NDC was making every effort to prevent him from becoming the NPP’s flagbearer because the ruling party was afraid.
