Boakye Agyarko and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, both former ministers of energy, are the most recent candidates to submit their nomination papers for the NPP’s presidential primary.
Former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia filed their applications last week, and the two submitted theirs on Monday, June 19.
After the filing, Dr. Akoto addressed the media and pleaded with party members to join forces in order to ‘Break the 8’ in December 2024.
He claimed that only by working together could the party win the 2024 elections.
“A half an egg won’t be able to break the eight. Everyone in this party is significant in this regard, especially the delegates who have been granted the constitutional authority to select the party’s flagbearer. It must be the complete egg.
“I hope that at the end of the day, delegates will have the chance to hear what we have to say and make the best decision so that this party can remain in power in 2024.”
Dr. Afriyie Akoto spoke about the small group of persons who took him to the party headquarters and claimed they did so voluntarily.
He claimed that his campaign staff did not provide transportation to the party’s headquarters via buses or by hiring large buses.
“Let me stress that everyone who has come here, even farmers’ leaders, has come voluntarily. You cannot see any bused crowds or large commercial vehicles transporting people to come and support.
The former agriculture minister continued, “I am extremely appreciative that people have come of their own accord and own conviction that my candidature will be good for the people of Ghana and the NPP.
The first candidate to choose his application, Mr. Boakye Agyarko, who is also a former policy consultant for the party, declares that he is prepared to serve.
On May 26, 2023, the NPP began accepting nominations for the presidential primary. On June 24, 2023, it will end accepting nominations.
Currently, 10 people have chosen nomination forms to run for the NPP’s presidential nomination, including well-known individuals like Mr. Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.
On August 26, 2023, the Party intends to conduct a Special Delegates Congress to choose the top five contenders. The contest to become the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2024 General Election will thereafter take place on December 4, 2023, amongst these five contenders.
