President John Dramani Mahama has expressed his deep grief for the deaths of Ghanaian tomato vendors in northern Burkina Faso, calling the tragedy a concerning sign of the subregion’s growing instability.

A terrorist attack on Saturday, February 14, claimed the lives of at least seven Ghanaian traders. Since then, Burkina Faso authorities have buried the deceased’s bodies with the Ghanaian government’s agreement.

Prior to burial, DNA samples were collected to guarantee accurate identification and inform families.

During his remarks at the Ghana Tree Crop Investment Summit in Accra on Tuesday, February 17, President Mahama emphasised the risks that cross-border traders confront as well as the larger risks that regional instability presents to social and economic integration.

And regrettably, we lost several of our countrymen. Fortunately, some people have survived. In order for the injured to continue receiving care in Ghana, the Ghana Army is making arrangements to medevac them from Burkina Faso.

He offered support and sympathy to the impacted families, saying, “On behalf of the government and the people, we express our condolences to the families of those who were either killed or injured.”
