John Jinapor, the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, has reassured Parliament that steps are being taken to address the nation’s persistent power meter deficit.

Speaking to the House on Monday, March 16, the Minister clarified that as efforts are made to reduce the backlog, more meters are anticipated to be provided to customers in the upcoming weeks.

He said that a combination of overcommitted supply contracts and financial difficulties impacting procurement caused the shortage.

Mr. Jinapor added that the Electricity Company of Ghana’s cash waterfall mechanism for allocating money has caused delays in obtaining sufficient meters.

The Ministry has raised ECG’s monthly budget from 300 million cedis to 360 million cedis as part of steps to remedy the situation. Additionally, the sum has been linked to a portion of the total revenue collected by the business.

The Minister clarified that since higher collections will result in larger allocations, the structure is intended to encourage ECG to enhance its revenue mobilisation.

While stressing that the rollout will be properly managed to prevent waste, he also reassured the public that new meters are being provided gradually and that distribution will shortly take up.
