The public is urged not to eat fish from the impacted area as authorities have opened an inquiry into a mass fish death incident that was reported at the Tema Shipyard.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Fisheries Commission, Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), and the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) stated in a joint press release on April 9, 2026, that the event was initially discovered on April 6.

Numerous dead fish were discovered within 50 meters of the main unloading ramp, according to the statement. Security workers first noticed the incident between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m., which prompted officials to act right away.

Since then, a rapid-response team consisting of Tema Port authorities, police officers, and FDA inspectors has secured the spot and started looking into what caused the incident.

There isn’t any proof of intentional sabotage or an urgent, widespread health emergency, according to officials.

For laboratory analysis, between 60 and 80 fish samples and water samples were gathered under stringent chain-of-custody protocols.

Authorities have issued a public advisory advising locals and the broader public to wait for an official “all-clear” before harvesting, buying, or consuming fish or shellfish from the Tema Shipyard and surrounding locations.

Additionally, they guaranteed that when properly prepared, fish from verified cold-chain markets outside of the impacted area is safe to eat.

Additionally, people who may have eaten fish from the area and are experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dizziness, or skin irritation have been advised to seek immediate medical attention. The public has been urged to report any sightings of dead or distressed fish to the FDA.

Authorities advise the public to rely solely on official communication channels for accurate information and state that more updates will be given as investigations proceed.
