A 26-year-old man has been arrested after reportedly attempting to steal a Ghana Police Service armoured vehicle in a dramatic daylight event at Nkawie Market in the Ashanti Region.

Ebenezer Frimpong, the suspect, is said to have exploited a momentary security breach when the car’s driver left the engine running to go buy medication.

A police situational report states that the incident happened on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at around 10:00 a.m. while Lance Corporal Joshua Denkyi of the Formed Police Unit was driving the armoured vehicle from Nkawie to the Ashanti Regional Police Workshop in Kumasi for maintenance.

According to the police, the officer momentarily stopped close to the Nkawie Market and left the car alone while he went inside a local drugstore.

The police and others were shocked when Frimpong allegedly got into the armoured car and sped away quickly.

A SWAT squad was sent out to trace and apprehend the stolen car after a quick alarm prompted a prompt regional response.

The culprit was apprehended at Mim, close to Abuakwa in the Kumasi enclave, almost half an hour after the pursuit, which spanned the Nkawie–Abuakwa stretch.

Seven tactical officers participated in the operation, which was headed by Inspector Benjamin Nartey.

Frimpong is helping with enquiries, and police stated that the armoured vehicle has subsequently been found and secured as an exhibit.

He was sent to the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department for additional questioning after being detained at the Abuakwa District Police Command.
