Carlos Ahenkorah, a former member of parliament for Tema West, has formally declared his intention to run for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Treasurer post in advance of the party’s next national executive elections.

Mr. Ahenkorah said in a statement released in Accra on Sunday that his decision was the result of what he called thorough deliberations with party elders nationwide, constituency and regional leaders, and grassroots members.

He states that as the NPP reorganises and gets ready for the 2028 general elections, it needs a more robust and open financial management system.

He emphasised that rebuilding the party and bolstering activities at the constituency and voting station levels would require efficient financial management.

“Every cedi that comes in and goes out must be accounted for,” Mr. Ahenkorah said, adding that in order to assist mobilisation, constituency activities, and election-day operations, resources must swiftly reach the grassroots.

If elected, the former Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry promised to encourage discipline and accountability in the handling of party funds.

Additionally, he pledged to increase the party’s funding base and guarantee fair resource distribution at all party levels.

The former member of parliament for Tema West stated that his background in public life, which included overseeing budgets as a deputy minister and legislator, had given him the knowledge required for the role.

Mr. Ahenkorah also urged delegates to back his campaign, claiming that a unified and financially sound NPP would be in a better position to win back the public’s trust and take back power in 2028.

As the party starts getting ready for the upcoming general election cycle, the NPP is anticipated to hold its national leadership elections later this year.
