Ghana’s Black Stars lost 2-0 to Mexico in an international friendly in Puebla on Friday, conceding in both halves as both nations continued to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June, according to the Ghana Football Association.

Ghana, who also lost their double header friendly matches to Germany and Austria in March, has now suffered three straight losses.

Ghana nearly fell 2-1 to four-time World Cup winners Germany following a catastrophic 5-1 loss to Austria.

Days before Ghana’s final World Cup selection is revealed, the game gave Desmond Ofei a better look at his team and gave young players a chance to make an impression.

With a back four consisting of Terry Yegbe, Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong, and Jan Kwasi Gyamerah, Benjamin Asare maintained his position in goal.

Daniel Agyei and Felix Afena-Gyan led the line in a 4-4-2 formation, while Emmanuel Agyei, captain Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman, and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi began in midfield.

Within two minutes, Brian Gutiérrez gave the home team the lead. Ghana responded calmly, but Mexico appeared at ease with the ball and led 1-0 at halftime following a strong first half performance.

In the 54th minute, Guillermo Martínez doubled Mexico’s lead. Ofei replied by making several replacements in the second half, but they were insufficient to alter the outcome.

In the 66th minute, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Daniel Agyei, and Felix Afena-Gyan were replaced by Prince Amoako, Jerry Afriyie, and Razak Simpson. Later, Abdul Aziz Issah, Joseph Opoku, Salim Adams, and Solomon Agbasi replaced Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman, Emmanuel Agyei, and Benjamin Asare.

Ghana gained fresh momentum in the last moments as a result of the adjustments, but Mexico prevailed.

The team will now concentrate on its June 2, 2026, friendly match against Wales in Cardiff.

Ghana, drawn in Group L, will play Croatia, Panama, and England, the 1966 World Cup winners.

The four-time AFCON champions recently appointed Carlos Queiroz who replaced Otto Addo.

Ghana lost two of their preliminary matches (3-2 to Portugal and 2-0 to Uruguay) and won one (3-2 against South Korea) before falling in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
