Ghana and Jamaica are in the final stages of completing a bilateral labour agreement to enable the ethical recruitment and deployment of Ghanaian health professionals to Jamaica, according to Health Minister Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
During a meeting with the Jamaican Health delegation, Hon. Akandoh stated that the agreement was ready for formal signing after completing all technical, legal, and diplomatic procedures.
He said that the first group of Ghanaian medical experts is scheduled to leave for Jamaica in June of this year. He also stated that the collaboration would boost healthcare systems in both nations, foster talent exchange, and provide job possibilities.
The Health Minister emphasised that the arrangement would prioritise the welfare and professional development of health workers while adhering to globally recognised ethical recruitment criteria.

According to Hon. Christopher Tufton, Jamaica’s Minister of Health and Wellness, the deal is a significant step toward resolving global healthcare disparities and labour shortages through South-South cooperation.
He pointed out that the agreement shows how both nations can work together to improve healthcare access, exchange knowledge, and fortify their health systems for the sake of their citizens.
In the meantime, Hon. Akandoh has instructed Ministry of Health staff to start implementation procedures as soon as the Memorandum of Understanding is signed.
In addition to workforce mobility, Ghana and Jamaica are investigating cooperation in plant medicine research, public health, pharmaceutical cooperation, digital health systems, specialised medical training, and emergency preparedness.
In order to strengthen institutional ties and learn more about Ghana’s healthcare delivery systems, the Jamaican team is anticipated to tour a few healthcare facilities and regulatory organisations in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Central Regions.
