The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has learned of a fake press release about supposed immigration measures targeting African people living in Cambodia that is making the rounds on social and traditional media platforms.

It is purportedly issued by the Government of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

According to the fake circular, inhabitants of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African nations have been ordered to depart Cambodia by May 31, 2026, or face financial penalties, arrest, and jail for immigration offences.

The Ministry would like to reassure the public that the aforementioned notice is completely fraudulent and was not issued by any official entity in Cambodia, as confirmed by diplomatic contacts with the appropriate Cambodian authorities.

It should be mentioned that the Kingdom of Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration, which is part of the Ministry of Interior, has clarified to the press today that the aforementioned warning is “completely untrue.” (A copy is attached to this news release.)

Therefore, it is recommended that the general public and Ghanaian media ignore the discredited document and refrain from disseminating unreliable information that could unnecessarily cause worry and concern in the affected individuals and their families.

However, the Ministry would like to report that some Ghanaians living in Cambodia had previously said that they would like to voluntarily return to Ghana.

Eighty-five (85) Ghanaians have already been evacuated between March and May of 2026 thanks to the Government of the Republic of Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to the Kingdom of Cambodia, working with pertinent parties.

It is noteworthy that plans are in place to likewise facilitate the evacuation of seventy-six (76) Ghanaian people who are presently in Cambodia and have indicated a wish to return home.

To guarantee the security, well-being, and safety of Ghanaian citizens in Cambodia, the Ministry will keep up its close cooperation with all pertinent authorities.

To guarantee these Ghanaians’ safe return, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is collaborating with Cambodian authorities.

We commend the Kingdom of Cambodia’s government for their outstanding cooperation.

The Ghanaian government reaffirms its dedication to protecting Ghanaian citizens’ rights and advises the public to only consult official sources for information on issues pertaining to Ghanaian citizens.
