The National Association of Registered Midwives, Ghana (NARM-GH) has demanded justice for a midwife who was allegedly attacked on Tuesday at the Tema Community 22 Hospital.
Leticia A. Atiah, the association’s national president, signed a press release denouncing the incident, which was caught on camera and has since gone viral on social media. It called on the authorities to take the matter all the way to the end.
The association claims that the regular attacks on healthcare workers not only put their lives in jeopardy but also lower the standard of healthcare services provided nationwide.
According to the statement, “Midwives and other healthcare workers dedicate their lives to serving the public, often under challenging conditions, and must be allowed to carry out their responsibilities in a safe and secure environment.”
“We respectfully call on the appropriate authorities to ensure that justice is served to the affected midwife and the facility. The case should be pursued to its logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar acts against healthcare workers,” it added.
The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS), among other health sector stakeholders, were also encouraged by NARM-GH to take decisive action to address all types of assault against healthcare workers in the nation.
The group also underlined the need for the MoH to increase public education about the proper channels for filing complaints and seeking redress in healthcare institutions, pointing out that this might help lower the number of such events.
It thanked the Ghana Police Service for acting quickly to restore order and start the required legal procedures after the occurrence.
The group additionally praised the GHS’s Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate for helping the hospital and the impacted midwife.
NARM-GH reiterated its dedication to promoting a secure, courteous, and supportive workplace for all midwives and medical professionals nationwide.
