A multi-story building at Osu in the Korle Klottey Municipality has been demolished by Accra city authorities after a structural failure left the structure dangerously unstable.
The demolition takes place one day after another building in Accra’s North Industrial Area in Avenor collapsed, killing two people.
On Monday, June 8, excavators were at the Osu location demolishing the building. Three of the building’s seven stories were reportedly lost when they collapsed.
The engineers claim that although the remaining four stories are still intact, their structural integrity has been jeopardised.
As worries about old and deteriorating buildings in the capital rise, the continuous demolition is intended to remove safety hazards to adjoining homes, drivers, and inhabitants.
The drill follows the June 3 collapse of another structure at Adenta, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
The destruction of Osu, according to the authorities, is a component of larger preventative steps to lower the danger of building collapses and enhance public safety in the Greater Accra Region.
