Elye Wahi, an international player for Ivory Coast, has been refused entry to Canada for his nation’s World Cup group match against Germany on Saturday.

Due to his involvement in spot-fixing in Ligue 1, the Nice forward was reportedly arrested last month prior to the World Cup.

The 23-year-old Wahi, who began Sunday’s World Cup victory over Ecuador, has been charged with intentionally receiving a yellow card while playing for Nice against Metz in May.

The purposeful manipulation of match events in order to profit from betting markets is known as “spot-fixing.”

The Marseille public prosecutor’s office acknowledged the arrest of a 23-year-old football player who plays in France’s Ligue 1 in a statement to the Athletic, but it did not identify Wahi.

The Ligue de Football (LFP) announced on Wednesday that “an unusually high volume of bets placed on a warning involving the player Elye Wahi” had been reported to them.

The Ivory Coast Football Federation (FIF) acknowledged that Wahi had not been able to secure clearance to enter Canada, but they have not been informed of any “judicial or administrative proceedings” against him.

According to a statement, “The Ivorian Football Federation has taken note of the various articles and information published on this Wednesday, June 17, 2026, concerning the Ivorian international Elye Wahi.”

The Ivory Coast will play Curacao in Philadelphia on Thursday after playing Germany in Toronto.

Wahi was suspended for the first leg of Nice’s relegation play-off against Saint-Etienne on May 26 after receiving his fifth booking in the league.

Wahi returned for the second leg, when he scored twice in a 4-1 triumph to help Nice maintain their spot in the top division after the first game finished in a 0-0 stalemate.
